Hexadecimal to Decimal

To convert from hexadecimal to denary we use our base 16 table to find out the values of each column, our hexadecimal digit conversion chart to work out what each digit means and then calculate the value.

For example: the hexadecimal value 4A9F can be expressed as

(4 x 163) + (A x 162) + (9 x 161) + (F x 160)

= (4 x 4096) + (10 x 256) + (9 x 16) + (15 x 1)

= 1910310

Another example: What is the hexadecimal number 5AB7 expressed in base 10?

(5 x 4096) + (A x 256) + (B x 16) + (7 x 1)

= (5 x 4096) + (10 x 256) + (11 x 16) + (7 x 1)

= 23223
